A
perm can add body and bounce to limp and lifeless short hair. With
short hair, you don't have to stress about wrapping too much hair around
one perm rod, so it's wrapped using the croquignole, or vertical,
technique. On the other hand, long hair is wrapped using either a
vertical or spiral wrap method so the hair doesn't become crowded. The
wrap is the most important part of the perm. The shape your hair is
wrapped in is the shape it will have for months to come. That's why it's
so important to take your time and wrap the hair neatly and evenly
around the perm rods. Yes, you can do it -- beautifully.
1.
Shampoo your hair to remove any
styling products. If you tend to be a styling-product junkie, you should
probably use a clarifying shampoo to make sure any icky product buildup
is removed. Skip the conditioner -- we don't want it interfering with
the perm solution. Towel dry your hair to remove excess moisture, and
run a comb through it to remove tangles.
2.
Now you'll need to create a
section down the center of your head that's the width of your perm rod's
length when placed horizontally on top of your head. Place the perm rod
horizontally against your front hairline and use it as your guide. Make
a part on either side of the perm rod's ends with a tail comb. Comb the
hair on either side of the middle section down, and use hair clips to
secure each side section away from the middle section so it doesn't
wreck your wrapping.
3.
Wrap the bang section first.
Separate a section of hair from the middle section, using your tail
comb, that is roughly the width of the diameter of your perm rod's end
(the round part). Comb this section upward and sandwich the ends in an
end paper.
4.
Grab a perm rod and hold it
horizontally against the ends of the hair section. So your hair behaves
and wraps around the perm rod, use the fingertips of your nondominant
hand to press the hair's ends against the perm rod as you begin to roll
the perm rod down toward the scalp. Don't get stressed if you don't get
this motion the first time. Even the pros needed practice to get this
two-handed motion right.
5.
Continue to roll the perm rod
down until all the hair in that section is wrapped and your perm rod is
snug against the scalp. Hold the perm rod in place with your dominant
hand while your nondominant hand reaches across and grabs the cap of the
perm rod. Pull the cap to the open end of the rod, positioning the
elastic across the top of the perm rod. Place the cap in the opening to
secure the perm rod in place.
6.
Keep wrapping and rolling in the
same manner until all the hair in this middle section is wrapped up.
Double check for any hair that isn't wrapped smoothly around the perm
rod. Re-wrap any perm rods where the hair is sitting a little wonky, or
the curl won't form right.
7.
Now it's time to move on to the
side sections. Separate out a section of hair, starting at your front,
side hairline, the width of the length of your perm rod (just like for
the top section). Pin away the section between this section and the
already wrapped section -- its time will come.
8.
Wrap this section just as you
did the top one, until all that hair is wrapped. Move on and do the same
with the unwrapped section in the middle. When that's all wrapped,
repeat the whole sectioning-and-wrapping process for the other side of
the head.
9.
Give all the wrapped hair a
final misting of water. Hair is like a sponge, and damp hair will soak
up the perm solution much better than dry hair will. Congrats! You've
just wrapped a perm. You're now ready to apply the perm solution, baby.

Tips & Tricks
Always wrap your bangs in the direction you
plan on wearing them. If you wear them forward, wrap them forward, or
back if you like your bangs off your face. For a side bang, comb the
hair in the direction you'll wear them. Take sections as long as the
perm rod, and as wide as the diameter, out of the middle section and
wrap the hair toward you.
As sections of your hair dry out, continue to mist them with a water bottle to make wrapping the hair so much easier.
The smaller the perm rod, the tighter your
perm's curl will be. Avoid the poodle-perm look by choosing a perm rod
that your hair's length will wrap around 1 1/2 to two times, maximum.
