long face

If you share Gwyneth Paltrow’s oblong face shape, then congratulations -- you can wear a variety of hairstyles. When settling on a hairstyle, you do want to minimize the length of your face, while highlighting your soft, round features. A short, spiky ‘do will do if you keep the length on top to a minimum. If your hair is on the thin side, prepare to invest in some products that offer hold to keep your style strong.

Minimize Height

Because your face is longer than it is wide, you want to add volume to the sides of your face. Short styles with minimal height are best for oblong faces. Choose cuts with texture and layers at the sides, such as Lisa Rinna’s short and spiky hair. Ask your stylist to razor cut layers all over for a flirty, easy-to style look.

Bangs

You might be after spikes, but consider shortening your long face with bangs. You could style your hair into a choppy, flipped out bob with straight-across bangs and a side part to flatter your features.

Styling

While a short hairstyle might seem like less work, it can take some effort to get it just right. If you have thin hair, you will need to use styling gels or mousses to get the texture and volume you crave. Without these products, your hair may fall too flat against the sides of your head -- increasing the impression of face length. If a short ‘do is new for you, you may have to take considerable time in the first few weeks to become accustomed to styling it just so.

Considerations

Skip edgy punk styles like that worn by pop star Pink. The extra height on top will just make your face look extra long. These styles also call for thick tresses that will stand up. A short hairstyle is for the bold, confident gal; you can’t hide behind your tresses.
